4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 137)

Welcome back, everyone, to this weekly summary / recommendations overview of the 4 most interesting mobile games I played last week. Enjoy 🙂

This week, I included a beautiful physics-based gravity motorbiking game, a new 3D open-world MMORPG with a ton of content, a smooth action platformer by the developers of the Dragon Hills games, and a one-man indie PvP battler in the vein of Crash Arena Turbo Stars (C.A.T.S.).

Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Megabot Battle Arena [Game Size: 155 MB] (free)

Genre: PvP / Action / Strategy / C.A.T.S.-like – Requires Online Access

Orientation: Landscape

Required Attention: Full

tl;dr review:

Megabot Battle Arena is a fun C.A.T.S.-like indie game where we continuously build and upgrade a Mech / Robot by equipping various weapons and equipment before we head into the arena to fight another player's Mech.

Our Mech attacks automatically using the weapons we equipped, while we jump to avoid getting attacked, or change the direction of our Mech to always face the opponent. The objective is to defeat all opponents in each Championship tournament, so that we can progress to the next Championship.

The many Mech parts and crazy weapons makes the game a joy to play, and you can easily spend hours trying out different strategies by combining parts.

New Mech parts unlock from timed lootboxes, but a one-time $10 iAP removes the wait-times completely from the game, which is how the game monetizes (there ARE iAPs to buy premium currency too, but this is never needed if you buy the one-time $10 iAP).

Psebay: Gravity Moto Trials [Game Size: 78 MB] (free)

Genre: Motorbiking / Physics-based / 2D / Racing – Offline Playable

Orientation: Landscape

Required Attention: Full

tl;dr review:

Psebay is a physics-based 2D motorbiking game with an incredibly smooth and polished art-style reminiscent of Alto's Adventure, which gives it a very premium feel.

The game has us attempt to achieve 3 stars in each of the many levels that slowly introduce new gameplay elements, like gravity-changing orbs that once hit, rotate the entire world slightly.

The controls are easy to get used to, and between levels, we spend stars earned from completed levels on upgrading the power and maneuverability of our vehicle – and if we make a mistake, we can reset these upgrades for free.

The game monetizes through the occasional advertisement and a "Premium" iAP that removes those ads completely, enables a level editor, and gives us a cape that increases vehicle speed by 17% – all for just $3.

Cookies Must Die [Total Game Size: 178 MB] (free)

Genre: Action / Platformer – Offline Playable

Orientation: Landscape

Required Attention: Full

tl;dr review:

Cookies Must Die (by Dragon Hills devs "Rebel Twins") is a smooth, polished, fast-paced, and silly action platformer that has us destroy cookies and other sweets attacking us by smashing our body into them, or taking them out with our weapons.

We control our hero using only an awesome swipe-and-release mechanic similar to that found in ReversEstory, which means we enter a slow-mo mode whenever we tap and swipe across the screen, giving us a chance calculate a path that will avoid enemy bullets and destroy our opponents when we let go of our finger to flick our character through the air.

Between levels, we spend in-game gold on upgrading our character, buying new weapons, or even entirely new characters so that we can defeat the next chapter of levels, which all end with an epic boss-battle.

Monetization is relatively relaxed, focusing on iAPs to buy more in-game gold, which allows us to progress faster, and through incentivized ads to double-up the gold we've earned when we die.

Lumia Saga [Total Game Size: 2.06 GB] (free)

Genre: MMORPG / Roleplaying / 3D / Auto – Requires Online Access

Orientation: Landscape

Required Attention: Little

tl;dr review:

Lumia Saga is a huge 3D MMORPG with a cute art-style, no gender-locked classes, and an absolutely insane amount of gameplay systems and features, even counting a few surprises, like the Runescape-like "life" skills, which allows us to mine ores, collect herbs etc. to craft potions and items.

Lumia has two unique features I haven't seen in a mobile MMORPG before, which makes it worthy of attention: 1) The first has to do with its approach to loot. Our weapon and equipment pieces are made up of 3 "Cores", which can be switched out independently. Each Core changes the attributes and visual look of our weapon and equipment, which means we can even swap out certain Cores depending on the enemy we're about to fight to achieve the most optimal strategy.

2) The second unique feature is its approach to classes and skills. Every class has two sub-classes that we can swap between at any time. Each sub-class comes with its own set of skill and attributes, which means each class has one sub-class focused on DPS, and another focused on team-play.

Lumia is very heavy on its "auto" gameplay, though, with both auto questing and auto combat. For some players, this will be a huge turn-off, but for others, it's the reason they find the game appealing.

To me, Lumia feels like an incredibly elaborate and well-made "idle" game (not too unlike Ulala: Idle Adventure), and as such, it is quite enjoyable.

The game monetizes through selling items that allow us to level up faster, but it seems most things can be grinded through normal gameplay, and if we sell resources to other players on the in-game Auction House, we can even earn a currency that can be used to buy the most essential Cash Shop items for free.

Google Play: Here If that doesn't work, here's an alternative (depending on region).
